Great Florida Cattle Drive, Day Five

Missing Civilization.

Seminole Day

Not a whole lot to say here. The day was long and honestly boring. We weren’t with the cows but the terrain was a little tricky going through more compressed forests.

Day five, however, was Seminole day. The Seminole Tribe is a huge supporter of the Great Florida Cattle Drive. The tribes of Florida and white crackers have a tenuous history when it comes to cattle. Thankfully, the Cattle Drive seeks to heal that rift of history’s pains and celebrates the contributions of the native tribes of Florida as well as gives the Seminoles a platform to teach their history and the persecution. Without the Seminole tribe of Florida, the cattle drive would not be able to happen. They are a valuable piece of our history as Floridians and an important part of Florida’s agricultural history. I’m very thankful for their collaboration. Without them, aside from the drive not being able to happen, we also would not have had the Cracker Cattle Herd for day six.

Seminole day has become on of the most looked forward to days of the drive. Not only does the tribe tell of their history, both as a tribe and personal, but they also teach us dances we are allowed to participate in (some dances outsiders are not allowed to participate). We had a huge bonfire and absolutely a feast of a meal with huge steaks and half chickens on top of loaded potatos. I wanted to eat so much but couldn’t.

It was one of my favorite nights. So much so, I won’t even address the fact that one of our horses escaped from us and had an escapade through camp. That just taints it a bit.
